so you’ve come back
to hear this bird sing its song again
not sure what you’ve come here
expecting
tried to figure out
the simplest solution
but I don’t even have
the time
tried to figure out
the best way to live
I wanted to share it
with you
but all I’ve found is wind
blowing through the tall grass
and all you’ve found is my
voice
so you’ve come back
to hear this bird
sing its song again

what am I doing here?
can’t seem to help myself
can I live in this fear
or will I destroy myself?
what are you doing here?
can’t seem to help yourself
can you live in this fear
or will you destroy yourself?

i took out my acrylic paints
& painted eyes on the tea kettle
… nice to look at…
…good to be seen…
the tea kettle, over there on the stove
me, over here on the couch
(no walls between us
easy eye contact)
sometimes i boil the water in the tea kettle
just to hear the sound:
the tea kettle & i tell stories to each other
we whistle each other into existence
i took the shower curtain off the shower
so i can see the whole bathroom:
no way anyone can sneak in
i hear sounds no one else can hear
except for maybe the mice
who live in the walls
if i fear i’ve gone crazy
does that make this house a mental institution?
(or does it make me crazy for deciding it is?)
or is a mental institution not defined
by the state of the people within it
but rather by the group delusion
that involves the patients
the doctors
the administrators
the janitors
& the groundskeeper?
today the whistling of the tea kettle
sounds a little more somber;
not the pitch, but something about the tone
(maybe a little weaker
a little more raspy)
two eyes meet mine
...if only the mice in the walls could confirm...
